The Nigerian House of Representatives has advanced a constitutional amendment bill seeking to remove the immunity currently granted to the Vice President, Governors, and their Deputies. This bill, which passed its second reading on March 26, 2025, aims to curb corruption, eradicate impunity, and enhance accountability among public officials.
Sponsored by Representative Solomon Bob, the proposed legislation specifically targets Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution, which presently exempts these officials from criminal and civil prosecution while in office. The bill proposes to qualify the immunity conferred on the President and remove it entirely from the Vice President, Governors, and their Deputies.
In addition to this bill, the House also passed for second reading a proposal to create a constitutional role for traditional rulers, recognizing their advisory functions within the governance framework. These developments are part of a broader legislative effort, with the House considering 42 constitutional amendment bills focused on devolution of power, strengthening institutions, state creation, and enhancing local government administration.
These legislative measures reflect an ongoing commitment to reform Nigeria’s constitutional and governance structures, aiming to promote transparency, accountability, and more effective public administration.
