Investigators in Delta State have reportedly arrested two suspects, including the alleged sender of the Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition connected to the fatal Effurun incident in which 28-year-old Oghenemine “Mene” Ogidi was shot dead by police officer ASP Nuhu Usman. According to a Vanguard report citing unnamed sources, the two suspects were moved into the Effurun Area Command on Wednesday night as police expanded efforts to trace everyone involved in the movement of the weapon and the circumstances surrounding Ogidi’s death.
The report said one of those in custody is believed to be the person who allegedly sent the firearm through a transport line from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, to Effurun, where Ogidi reportedly picked up the parcel to forward it to an owner in Sapele before he was intercepted and later killed. The identity of the second suspect had not been officially clarified as of the report, though sources suggested it could be the driver who transported the parcel from Bayelsa.
There has not yet been a formal public confirmation from the Delta State Police Command on the two new arrests. What police have officially confirmed is that ASP Nuhu Usman was arrested and transferred for disciplinary proceedings after Ogidi was killed on April 26 in what the force said was a clear breach of Force Order 237 and police operating procedures. The Inspector-General of Police later approved his dismissal and prosecution, alongside other implicated officers, pending ratification by the Police Service Commission. If confirmed, the latest arrests would mark a significant development in the effort to separate the original firearms investigation from the now much more prominent case of alleged extrajudicial killing. For now, however, the reported arrests remain based on media and source accounts rather than a full official police statement.
