Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has directed troops operating in the North-East to adopt a more aggressive posture against insurgents, including a “shoot-on-sight” order targeting terrorists encountered in the field.
The directive was issued during a visit to frontline troops in Maiduguri, Maiduguri, where the minister—accompanied by Bello Matawalle—said soldiers must no longer delay engagement while awaiting further instructions.
Musa also revealed that the military has begun implementing revised operational strategies aimed at ending insurgency across the North-East, following renewed attacks by extremist groups, including Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, particularly in parts of Borno State.
Addressing troops, the defence chief praised their sacrifices and urged continued discipline and focus, assuring them that their efforts are recognised at the highest levels of government. He stressed that troops must remain committed to eliminating security threats and avoid any form of misconduct while on duty.
The minister further disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has approved the acquisition of additional military hardware, including aircraft and drones, to strengthen ongoing operations.
Despite ongoing challenges, Musa expressed confidence in the military’s progress, noting that recent gains outweigh setbacks and reaffirming the government’s determination to restore stability and secure the region.
