With less than seven months to go until the first 48-team World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, the tournament lineup is rapidly taking shape — and it already features some historic storylines, shock absences and high-stakes playoffs to come.
Big Names In, Big Names Out
Reigning European champions Spain have confirmed their place, joined by surprise qualifiers Curaçao, while Haiti sealed an emotional return to the global stage, 52 years after their last World Cup appearance. Panama also booked their ticket to North America.
But qualification has not been kind to everyone.
Several notable nations have already crashed out, including:
- Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, who fell to DR Congo in the African playoffs final.
- Cameroon, Greece, Serbia, Chile, Mali and Costa Rica, all of whom will be watching from home.
Four-time world champions Italy are still alive, but only just — they now face the pressure of the UEFA playoffs to avoid another World Cup miss.
